Synopsis:

This workshop presents an overview of prominent feminist and gender theories and frameworks and discusses the ways they can help inform research on language and gender. The session also covers methodological and ethical concerns pertaining to conducting research on language and gender in different contexts and fields of interest.

Postgraduate students who are currently working/planning to work in language and gender research. Early career researchers would also find the discussions beneficial.

CONFERENCE WORKSHOP 2

TITLE:

 TRANSLATING GENDER - ISSUES & CHALLENGES IN MACHINE TRANSLATION

Synopsis:

Machine Translation (MT) has currently reached levels of performance that allow for its integration into real-world translation workflows. However, despite the high speed and various advantages of this technology, translation of gender which is one of the most frequent problems in the state-of-the-art MT systems, has raised a need to assess its quality and predict the required post-editing effort. The overall aim of this workshop is to explore the issues and challenges in Machine Translation of gender in different languages.

This workshop is suitable for:

Postgraduate students and early career researchers who are currently working/planning to work in translation research involving gender. Freelance translators would also find the discussions useful.

CONFERENCE WORKSHOP TRAINERS

DR. LEILA MOHAJER

Leila Mohajer is a Senior Lecturer at the Unit for Research on Women and Gender, School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. She obtained her PhD in Sociolinguistics from Universiti Malaya. She worked as a lecturer at the University of Applied Science and Technology in 2006 and cooperated with different centres and institutes as an English and IELTS Instructor. She has been the administrative director of an ongoing international leadership programme since 2016. She has led numerous projects on various topics, such as doctor-patient communication, and masculinity through language, among others. Her publications cover various topics, such as women and language, men’s talk, power and solidarity, gossip, language and culture, and other gender-related issues.
